Spineless moron doing spinelessly moronic things like always because pandering to far-right populist narratives is totally not stupid.
For reference (because the media is refusing to ever tell us the actual facts that don’t fit the right-wing narratives):
More than 15 years ago there were ~50.000 people (compared to a population of 81 million) that were due to leaving the country again but hadn’t done so already.
15 years later -and with between 100.000 and up to 1 million refugees coming in each year- that number has risen to … *insert drum-rolls here… ~54.000 people (now compared to a population of 84,5 million).
It’s basically a constant. Because there isn’t some magical huge amount of people illegally in Germany. They actually get deported or are leaving otherwise. That (rediculous low) number (in a country of that size) is basically made up by people delayed while leaving (often by weeks or some months… which is basically within the delays the stupid bureaucracy is already introducing).
The current coalition is sadly very weak when it comes to shaping the conversation. The far right, the CxU and FDP have convinced the population immigration is the biggest problem we have, while it could be handled with better organisation.
Immigration will not go away, rather increase to climate factors. We need to build up structures to handle it better.
I think the main problem is not really the number of people that are due to leave.
Most people tend to see and experience the other numbers you mentioned, i.e. 81 Mio vs 84,5 Mio.
How much of this increase can be attributed to organic population growth? How much of it is due to welcoming refugees?
54k really is ridiculously low, but I think an increasing amount of people do not know or care about this number. They just feel their lifes getting harder (not enough housing, food prices, stressed health systems…) and helplessly point their fingers on the seemingly easiest solution.
It’s so funny, every political commentator I listen to keeps repeating that pandering to AfD demands will only help the AfD and not the other parties, yet they all keep doing it.
Because all bourgeois parties are effectively the same.
Social democracy is the moderate wing of fascism.
Pandering to the far-right is the only avenue open to bourgeois politicians, as turning to the left (anti-capitalist) is a non starter. All the commentators can do is say “don’t do this,” while not being able to offer any real alternatives.
This type of strategy went really well for the socdems in Sweden /s
