It took place on a weekday morning, in the late 2000s, I dropped my ex at her workplace, and then I start driving towards my own workplace. I need to take a tunnel downtown, there’s a traffic light just before the tunnel. The light is red, I wait. The light turns green, I go ahead, along with another car next to me.

Right behind me, in my mirror, I see police cars blocking the street at the traffic light. I’m the last car that went through the traffic light. No other cars can make it behind me.

I’m kinda freaking out. Why are the police cars blocking the way to the tunnel?

I then realize there are only two cars in the tunnel, mine, and the car just before me. No other car. At 9am. On a weekday. What the hell is going on?

I keep on driving, everything seems normal, apart from the complete lack of cars.

Eventually, I see the end of the tunnel, with police cars on either side of the road. And police officers making OBVIOUS signs with their arms : “Get the fuck out of there, quick, faster!”.

Me and the other car make it out of the tunnel, then In my mirror, again, I see 4 police cars blocking the way out of the tunnel.

I turned on the radio. Nothing about this event. I searched the news websites for the whole day, I didn’t find anything. I asked around, at work, in social media, nobody knew about this. I didn’t think of calling the police station. I never learned what the hell happened in this tunnel.

My bet is it was either a bomb threat, or they had to catch a known criminal in this tunnel, or maybe a collapse danger of some kind. But the fact that it didn’t make local news is mind boggling to me. I sometimes wonder if I dreamed this.

What stuck out to me is cops were blocking it after you went through. Can you expand on this? Did they pull up after you and the other car entered or was it like they were already there and you somehow ‘drove past the car block without noticing’?

Often times stuff happens and just doesn’t make the news, nobody calls it in to them. And sometimes stuff is reported and they just don’t follow up on it or have interest. If it was something with the cities underground tunnel/piping network (especially likely if it was an in-ground tunnel) it could have been something going on in the entrance/exit to the tunnel system, or there could have been a severe gas/water/etc leak in that area.

Happened probably in 2009 or 2010, I really don’t recall if there were police waiting on the side of the road or not. Probably not. Why would they wait for the light to turn green to block the road? I just remember advancing in the tunnel and looking in the mirror, there were police car blocking the road behind me.

But I bet it was something like that. No idea why it was so urgent for me to get out of there.

I bet so. I have a couple similar strange stories and I’ve told them in multiple places but after the nth time retelling you just stick to the basic facts of what happened. No fluff.

When I was growing up I was at my grandmother’s house out in the woods, she had land on a hill so the sky was pretty visible and usually very clear at night. The stars were easy to spot. One particular night I was looking down her driveway when I saw the entire sky light up green. It turns out meteorites burning up in the atmosphere can turn the whole sky green suddenly, but I didn’t know that at the time and it freaked me out bad.

At least we live in an age where you can find out what happened relatively easily. Imagine seeing that in the 1500’s

Dissociation as a side effect of a medication I was on.

It is really hard to describe. It was as if I was a passenger within my own body and mind. I was watching myself do and say things with no feeling of presence or control.

Woke up with vertigo. Had to basically lay there with my eyes closed not moving for probably 10 minutes because every tiny movement felt like I was gonna throw up.

I had that happen to me too.

I hear it’s a derangement in your balancing thing, in your inner ear. Chunks of stuff or sticky hairs or something.

I was afraid it was permanent but it came and went over a couple days and then went away.

I was walking home at maybe 11 pm on a spring night in Cambridge MA probably 2013-ish - along Broadway down in Kendall square where it meets Ames street. I saw a man in his late fifties maybe early sixties in a business suit run across the street when the light was green. He fell in the middle of the road near the side I was on (this has two lanes each way or did at that time) and stood up right as two cars sped by him on either side. Neither car slowed at all like they saw him and he got to the sidewalk where I was standing. I had stopped and I was maybe five feet from him and asked “hey are you ok?!?” He looked at me and then just took off running down a walking path that continues to cross between blocks.

It was the oddest thing, like other people were walking on the sidewalk and should have seen this guy almost get killed but it was like I was the only one who saw this.

Outer body experience once while walking through my neighborhood. Sudden sensation of flying upward while looking down before I shook it off.

They say that everybody experiences stuff like that. Out of body. ESP. Precognition. Ghosts etc. The trick is to get control over it. (See “The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali” for more on that.)

But it doesn’t fit into the popular narrative, so we don’t talk about it. We call it “hallucination”. Now get back to work.

If this kind of stuff exists, but we ignore it, we must be crazy.
