We frequently get one-time posters coming in and flaming (or downvoting without reading) on any thread that may not agree with them, then when challenged with sources, they vanish. It’s brutal. I wish we could disable certain behaviours on our instance or in the Community itself.

The number of indignant replies and comment-free downvotes we get inundated with continually is… disheartening.
People want content, but actively detract from any content that doesn’t explicitly cater to them. It’s hard to take.
As someone who started and is extremely active in a small community, I find Lemmy actively hostile to the point where I’m considering closing up after less than a month.

As someone who runs a community, the ability to disable downvotes and have more customization within that Community would help a great deal.
I also wouldn’t mind the ability to post something like a Delta on a comment to show a changed view or something.
There would be no way for them to gain that knowledge. I could believe that they potentially lost their primary language and spoke a mild amount of other languages that they had picked up by osmosis…
But I am doubtful that they would be able to have a full conversation with a native speaker.
There’s no way the human brain could just conjure up a fully functioning secondary language that the person had no exposure to.
I get it, but it doesn’t have to be just pure stats. Could have been mild ability improvements or something or maybe changed some of the effects or visual things that occurred around you. Hell, even walking speed improvement or something like a tone to help you locate hidden items.
There’s a lot they could have done considering we’re dealing with magical items! Still had a pretty good time with it overall though.
Never got into Harry Potter since I was too old. This game was really fun to just explore and I constantly felt a forward momentum. Some of the stories were good, and some were awful.
I would absolutely play a sequel just based on the well done sense of discovery alone. I just wish more of what you found was impactful instead of cosmetic.
I liked With Teeth, but it’s a pretty far cry from The Fragile (or even TDS).
This is exactly what I was coming here to comment. This album was fucking astounding, complex, beautiful, intense, musical, destructive… Every single noise in that album was intentional and meant something. Trent was making music at the time that was so far above and beyond what anybody else was doing or has done since.
Then Atticus Ross joined. Now they make background music for movies. It is fucking heartbreaking.
No matter the outcome of this, nobody is learning that lesson from this demonstration.
If you want to take a (more obvious) environmental bent, this is a terrible idea for them to do because all they’re doing is causing vehicles to have to run substantially longer.

But manually looping any part of it inside the video which you can do past the first 2 minutes would still not be an ad. Also, who doesn’t use an ad blocker on YouTube? All of those problems that you listed have incredibly easy solutions that you can execute with zero training.
And realistically if they are looking for profit (and they absolutely are) I still see no reason why they would keep these up. The benefits are absolutely minimal at best and the drawbacks are quite large.
Sometimes they are, if it’s just audio and a static image. Some of them definitely are not that though. The ones with visualizers or full music videos or the like are not nearly as compressible.
So to combat use cases like this, why not just add a repeat option? There would be no break if it cached the beginning again.
Also just download the audio you want and loop it yourself. It would take roughly 2 minutes and use way less bandwidth.
I wonder why they would kill old videos instead of just removing those 10-hour plus loops of the same song over and over again that nobody watches. You’d think those giant loop videos would be taking up far more space.
Funnily enough, “not so smart joke” is the same descriptor I have for no-discussion downvoters.
My liver may be flower-scented, but I tend to not paint situations in broad-stoke terms like “woke” that are used to dismiss valid arguments.
You can’t disprove a label (especially a vague one that someone else applies to you), however you can very much disprove points.

No-discussion downvoters are a massive problem here moreso than any other site I’ve ever used.
