This is such an accurate description of X, thanks for that! W/r/t getting people off of corporate social media platforms, I think this is one area where celebrities could really do some good. The Fediverse isn’t on most peoples’ radars—and while there is a vague, burgeoning awareness that social media might be problematic, people are accustomed to their feeds, and frankly have more pressing things to worry about.

What’s more, even people who are acutely aware of the situation continue to use these platforms, because the artists/journalists/content creators and what-have-you that they follow are still on these platforms. I’ve seen a thousand comments to this effect here on Lemmy. I listen to a ton of podcasts, political and otherwise, and all the hosts are left of center to varying degrees. I’m constantly gritting my teeth when they talk about their instagram feeds, and ask me to follow them on Vichy twitter.

I understand that social media in general, and twitter in particular, has been a really useful tool for people to communicate with their audience, and build a following. I tell myself that it isn’t reasonable to expect all these people that I respect and listen to daily to hold themselves to a higher ethical standard, because it might shrink their audience, and thus threaten their livelihoods. We can’t expect the smaller fish to lead the way on this.

But, if someone could get a big name talking about this stuff, it could really make a difference. It’s just too easy to ignore right now.

But seriously. I’ve seen a thousand conversations where everybody bitches about some person or people.

In a number of your comments, you’ve said things like “you people are all the same.” What group of people are you talking about? Is your question directed at them (us?), or a separate group? All your statements and questions are vague and reductive, to the point that no one has any idea what you’re getting at.

Yeah, I only looked it up because I remembered being charged for dropping off a broken TV at a Texas location.

It looks like they’ll take certain items free, while others (like non-Best Buy branded televisions) you have to pay them to recycle. In California there’s no charge for store drop-off; I imagine because they have a dedicated e-waste recycling fee.

Looks like the pink heart is against federating with meta.

Happy to see that nearly all the biggest Lemmy instances are blocking it, with the glaring exception of lemmy.world, which is the largest by far. lemmy.world is to lemmy as AOL was to the early internet—the default bucket for those who don’t know any better.

Yeah, social media algorithms are doing a lot of damage. I wish there was more general awareness of this. Based on personal experience, I think many people actually like being fed relevant content, and are blind to the consequences. I think Lemmy is great, because you have to curate your own feed, but many people would never use it for that very reason. I don’t know what the solution is.

Yeah, I think this is a great take. It’s pretty easy to avoid all the mercenary practices that tend to plague most “AAA” titles these days— mostly by not buying the games at launch; eventually they all come around as giveaways, or at least at a deep discount. And as you say, there are a plethora of small developers putting out amazing games all the time. I’ve been getting a ton of mileage the last couple of months out of Vagrus and Dredge.

There’s no algorithm feeding you content on Lemmy, which I think most of its denizens regard as a good thing. I certainly do. You’ve got to self-curate! Of course, some of the curation occurs at the instance level, with admins defederating other instances. But you’re free to make accounts on any number of instances, or even host your own! I think Lemmy’s really grown on me.

And yeah, there’s lots of furry porn, if you’re into that.

I really don’t see these $3500 VR goggles (or any other goggles) being widely—or hell, even narrowly—adopted as a TV replacement. There are frankly an exhausting number of reasons why not. For one, it would only make sense for those who exclusively use their TV alone. That rules out the vast majority of television owners right off the bat.

Sure, and when you petition the people they follow, and ask them to drop the platform, they say they have to be where their audience is. It’s an ouroboros of apathy and cowardice.

I love Roadwarden! My only issue is that I’ve taken a break for a while mid-playthrough, and now I don’t remember what I was doing. I may just have to start fresh. I also just picked up Vagrus: The Riven Realms, which is similarly awesome.
