For the phone bit, I started off with really old smartphones like a Galaxy S1, but basically any old old phones are really built like mini laptops and are usually pretty modular as they weren’t often water resistant or actively anti-repair

However I fully get your point and fall into the same boat with cars

23yo zoomer here. Like everyone else, I was stuck on the Michael Cera one for a while, but it was because I never heard of the guy and even after googling I didn’t realise he was in one of the other photos.

Gosh texting on the Nokia felt so normal and equally a nice reminder on how nice the mobile keyboards we have now are.

I’ve never heard of a boomerang, the comments here filled me in but I’m not an Instagram user.

The iPod was fucking magical by the way, always wanted one as a kid growing up, even begging my parents just for the nano but they didn’t see the value in that compared to the cheap knockoff MP4 players. I still want one nowadays but they’re all stupid expensive.

  • Yeah, I believe that was a change they made not long after shafting 3rd party apps. I had a couple older iOS devices with their own older versions of third party apps, and that change effectively made any post with a Reddit uploaded image unviewable. Incredibly infuriating and I can’t understand the logic behind it either.

I will say that further to that, a few years ago Imgur made a change that does the same damn thing if it detects you’re on mobile. Unless you tick “Show Desktop Site” in your browser, it’s impossible to actually standalone view a direct image.

  • I still have my 1000H from 2010 and even used it for school and uni right up until 2019 when I no longer was doing on campus work and I could do everything on my desktop.

Granted, I went down the rabbit hole of Linux on it around the 2015 mark because Windows 7 onwards was too much for it, and it always had overheating issues, but it aided my Linux addiction and was the very laptop that got me interested in programming so I personally am happy I kept it.

That being said, I also totally get why a MacBook was just a much better value propositions, and if mine wasn’t my 10th birthday present I probably would’ve loved doing the same thing.

  • I think there’s no tenable solution unfortunately, but for me personally, as a viewer, I’d be happy to watch a single start video ad if I knew a half decent proportion went to the creator.

But with the way YouTube is to the creators, how unfair and unbalanced they are with copyright, the clear vision that they’re not doing things for the people but for corporate (removal of dislike count), I have no guilt continuing to block ads and essentially give the finger to the platform.

Once all the major creators I watch move to a better platform, I’d be rid of YouTube entirely in my life and I hope that’s what happens on a major scale.
