  • domain based blocking systems are nice for a base level of ad removal, they do nothing if the ads are coming from the same domain. sponsorblock is nice, but it’s the work of volunteers to remove those ads - if youtubes userbase were splintered over thousands of apps it wouldn’t be feasable.

i don’t know when i have seen just text-based ads in the last 10 years. those are an non-issue, even for me. the issues are scripts, user profiling and tracking.

the big difference is: the browser gives webpages/apps a standardized environment where the user has the last word regarding what runs on it or not (if you are not using chromium anyway). in apps, the user doesn’t have that luxury, especially regarding tracking and profiling.

  • i join in on the PSU chorus. no bluescreen normally means power loss, so either the PSU craps out, or it doesn’t get the power. a defect of the mainboard is not completely out of the question tho.

grab yourself the free version of HWInfo64, and check the voltages below, they should be a) stable (and i mean stable - mine do not move at all and i would be concerned if they did) and b) close to the values in the name (12v, 3.3v, 5v). since you have complete power loss, it’s probably the 12v.

PSUs do age and lose about 10% of “maximum wattage” where they still stay in tolerance levels per year.

e: even if the voltages seem stable and ok i would still start looking at replacing the PSU if it’s old. e2: a classic one would be loose cables tho, either Power Cable or the 12v connector to the mainboard

  • i think i would get notified in some way if the Mozilla Foundation changes ownership, and since it’s open source that is not much of an argument. open source is getting more common the last few years, but it’s definitely not common

sure, it doesn’t mean they can’t. everyone making their own app also means that they don’t per default.

and you didn’t touch the point regarding NO ADBLOCKING IN APPS while the whole debate here is because alphabet doesn’t want effective adblocking in their browser.

    • no unified password management (or even worse: everything gets just attached to your google/ios account - i hate apps that do not give me the option to keep stuff separate)
    • no history functions (esp. over multiple devices)
    • single apps getting bought out by marketing corpos or bad actors without getting notified
    • data sniffing apps are harder to reign in than my sandboxed browser tabs.
    • NO ADBLOCKING AVAILABLE IN APPS

I’m sure there are a lot more reasons, that’s just what came into my mind

  • Taking a stroll through my library:

    • The Ascent: Cyberpunk Action RPG, nice action and story, single/coop.
    • Star Valor: Top-Down Action space. not so much story wise, but great gameplay, costumisation, fleets, and the upcoming addon will add station building and (more) faction warfare.
    • Weird West: from the Arkane Austin crew (Prey 2016, Dishonored). Good story, immersive gameplay, and a innovative world. It’s 3rd person, but there is a mod which makes it 1st person!
    • Mortal Sin: Roguelike Melee-FPS. lots of fun, and the dev just replaced the level generation completely, adding verticality and much more variety.
    • Golden light: another Roguelike FPS, its on the weird side, but a lot to explore, had a lot of fun with that one!
    • Hardspace: Shipbreaker: scrapping spaceships in zero-g has never been more fun! good storyline highlighting the plight of workers in an inhumane system, and what they can do about it.
    • Styx: Master of Shadows: Thief-like gameplay, well polished.
    • Red Faction: Guerilla: Older game, Open world is a bit bland, but the realtime destruction of large buildings with explosives will never get old
    • and if you haven’t played it yet: the System Shock Remake is an absolute joy to play.

My current FPS fix is Deadlink: another roguelike FPS, very tight gunplay and movement, good looking too.

if you can give a few examples what games you enjoyed, i can probably point you in the right direction… i think i have a slight game collecting problem with a few thousand titles, but at least i can help people like you out lol
