  • Woah, can’t believe it’s been an year already!

For the anniversary day, maybe we could have a post showcasing a few highlights of our community over the past year, something like Spotify’s Wrapped, but for Lemmy - so maybe a highlight of the most upvoted posts/comments, most profilic posters, membership counts, major server changes and little victories (maybe share some of your experiences in keeping the ship afloat)?

  • Masterchef Australia Season 16. It was nice seeing Jamie Oliver on screen again. The new judges and participants are interesting too, and although it’s still very early in the season, they’ve already put out some very clever dishes. Can’t wait to see what else they come up with over the rest of the season!

  • Considering that predicting the next word from context is the one thing LLMs are really good at, I just don’t understand how none of these developments have found their way into predictive keyboards.

The problem is that LLMs require a considerable amount of computing power to run, unlike the simple markov chain predictions that keyboards use. You could use a cloud-based service like ChatGPT or something, but most people wouldn’t want their keyboards to send all their keystrokes to a remote server… and even if they didn’t know or care, the response time wouldn’t be good enough for real-time predictions.

Now smartphone SoC makers like Qualcomm have started adding NPUs (neural processing units) with their latest chips (such as the SD8 Gen 3, featured in the most recent flagship phones), but it’s going to take a while before devices with NPUs become commonplace, and it’ll take a while for developers to start making/updating apps that can make use of it.

But yeah the good news is that it is coming, it’s only a matter of “when” - I suspect it won’t be long before the likes of SwiftKey start to take advantage of this.

  • Spent a good chunk of my weekend catching up (online) with an old childhood friend, who I lost touch with over 15 years ago. We also played an old-school PC game (Diablo 2) that we played as kids - and it was so much fun. After that, we decided to make this a thing every weekend and revisit some of the old games we used to play back then and relive the good ol’ days, back when the worst of our worries were trying to get get good grades… :)

On to the more mundane stuff, I’m happy to report that my spring onions are doing great. They’ve survived for nearly two months now, on just some water and liquid fertiliser, in spite of harvesting them regularly. I’m never going to buy spring onions from the market again!

there is an incursion of Morning Glory.

Is this the edible variant, ie Ipomoea Aquatica (aka water spinach)?

  • For future reference - in case you want to order something over $1000: I recently bought a PC directly from a small manufacturer’s website (not your usual Amazon etc) which was over $1000 NZD, and I didn’t get charged any duties for it. I’m not a 100% sure why, but it could be that didn’t declare the full value on the waybill. And it also got shipped by DHL, who’d normally take care of clearing the customs duties etc and would contact you if you had to pay anything.

But on the other hand, if I’d ordered it via Amazon or eBay, I would’ve definitely had to pay duties. For instance, a couple of years ago, I had ordered another PC - this was from eBay - and they shipped it via DHL. Normally if the seller used the eBay Global Shipping option, eBay would’ve calculated and charged me the duties during checkout itself. In this case however, DHL handled it. I also had to apply for a client number with customs beforehand, since I was importing something over $1000 (this was basically just filing out a form and providing identification). But this can take a couple of weeks, so best to get registered well in advance, so as to not hold up the delivery.

So maybe what Dave implied was true (as in they keep any eye out only for the big name exporters).
