We have laws that regulate abortion, alcohol, etc already. I said nothing about “why have laws?” in any part of my argument. I said banning abortion will not reduce abortions, much less stop them. That statement is a proven fact.
You and others seem to be applying my belief that abortion should not be illegal to all other laws, which is not the case. That is my opinion on a singular issue. I never stated nor implied other laws shouldn’t exist.
You can equate the two, but they’re not functionally the same in reality. There is statistical evidence that banning abortion does not work and in fact has the opposite effect, so swapping the words makes no sense. A better comparison would be Prohibition in the US in the 1920s - banning alcohol didn’t stop the production or use of it, it just made it exceedingly dangerous, lots of people got sick, went blind, and died from homemade liquor that contained too much methanol.
If you truly care about the life of the child at conception and after its birth, you’d choose the option where there is never an unwanted or accidental pregnancy. Most unwanted pregnancies result in children suffering abuse, entering the foster system, and eventually aging out without ever having a permanent or stable family. Many of these kids live a life where they’ve NEVER been loved.
There are nearly 400,000 children in the foster system in the US right now and the number grows every day. There’s no one to adopt these babies. Forcing women to have children does not work. No child should ever be unwanted, every child deserves loving parents. This is the world that abortion bans create.
Nobody is pro-abortion. Nobody likes or wants women to have abortions, especially the women getting the procedure…it is NOT pleasant. Pro-choice supporters would be thrilled if there’s never another abortion again, as long there were no unwanted pregnancies.
The best, statistically proven method to prevent abortions is education and easy access to contraception. Full stop.

What does demonstrably reduce abortion to effectively insignificant levels is better sex education and easy access to contraceptives.

I did that. There were no options, just a dialogue saying they had refunded me a couple dollars for a price mismatch. But no button to report an issue on the app or web, no chat, no email or phone number. Just a Contact Us form that I filled out and submitted with all the information nearly a month ago, and no one from GrubHub has reached out. I finally just did a chargeback a couple days ago.
Yeah, let me know how to get GrubHub to even respond to a support request for an order that never arrived, much less refund me and then you can tell me GrubHub is better. I had an order that was never delivered on Sept 23 and GrubHub has still not responded to or refunded me. At least with Doordash or UberEats I can get issues with my order addressed almost immediately.
I agree with what you’re saying for the most part, but for a population the size of Australia with 1000 respondents, a 99% confidence level has a margin of error of 4% which is perfectly acceptable. Unless the survey targeted very specific demographics versus a random sample, it should be very accurate.

Brand new previous year models go on sale for that cheap every year when new models are released. If you want a killer deal on a brand new car, start looking at the handful of 2023 models still sitting on lots now that 2024 models are out.
Assuming that’s about a 60 mile commute and they average 30 miles per gallon, that means it costs your friends 1/8th of their income just to drive to work.
2 gals x $4/gallon x 2 trips = $16. That’s one hour of their eight hour shift that they have to work just to be able to work.
That’s if they get 30mpg. At 20mpg, it costs them $24, or 1.5 hours of work just to afford to get to work.

It’s really not. Run it in Docker on your home PC. You don’t need to moderate any users because you don’t need to have any users on your instance. It quite literally is “just set it up once,” defederate instances you don’t like, and occasionally upgrade the software like you do any other app.
That being said, a few Lemmy apps now support blocking entire instances, so that IS more simple than it was even a few weeks ago.
I’m a “best tool for the job” kinda person, and since only a few of the games I play work on Linux, my gaming PC will stay on Win10 til I’m forced to upgrade. We can all pretend that Linux comes anywhere close to the ease of use and compatibility of Windows or OS X, but it doesn’t. I wouldn’t be caught dead using anything Microsoft in a production capacity, or using Linux or OS X for gaming. Linux support for games has come a really long way, but I’m not going to hamstring myself just on principle, especially one as ridiculous as OS loyalty.
I’m a huge Linux supporter. I maintain an infrastructure of thousands of Linux servers, don’t have a single Windows install. My work laptop runs Linux, the only one in the company not on Windows or OS X. I have a mini-PC proxmox setup running a bunch of VMs for different services like pihole, FoundryVTT, NVR, etc. I use Linux for everything except my gaming PC.
And even I find the Linux fanboys absolutely intolerable. Go ask a question in @tech and any possibility of an actual helpful answer is drowned by hundreds of “Install Linux” comments that are all up voted to the top. The entirety of some of the most popular communities are completely worthless because of zealots like them.

You’re missing the point. If you conflate abortion and murder, you’re either being willfully ignorant or exceedingly simple. Just because some people equate two things, doesn’t make them the same in reality. Whether you like it or not they are different, and applying the same standards to them makes no sense.
Your argument is like saying “Advil and heroin are both pain relieving drugs, so the law should apply equally.” They are not the same, and we should not treat them the same, even if some people mistakenly equate them.
