  • HP inkjets are horrendous. I absolutely refuse to buy them because they are absolute junk. They have always worked, and I could connect to them with no problems with Android atleast. Windows finally could connect once I had assigned it a permanent local IP through the router. Though Linux had problems…

But the build quality of HP inkjets are absolute horrendous and I probably can only get 6 months out of them and probably spent more on ink cartridges in a year before the stupid printers suffer a complete hardware failure and need to be replaced.

The HP mfp 183fw colour LaserJet printer however… It is my second forray into HP laserjets since my dad’s original black and white Hewlett Packard LaserJet beast from the early 90’s.

But I feel like I got incredibly lucky after doing some research into it (plus only thing I could get locally at the time since I needed a new printer immediately.) It cost more than any of the inkjets I have owned in the past. The toner carts definitely cost more… But it is still going strong a year and a half after purchasing it and I have only had to replace the black toner cart only a week or two ago. Have not had to replace the colour toner carts yet. It also just works on Linux which I am happy about.

Like I said, I may have just gotten incredibly lucky though, I mean getting a year and a half out of it is still more than I expected and the money I saved because toner lasts much longer than ink.

When and if this printer gives up, I will probably get an Epson laserjet.

  • If children connecting and accessing porn websites is such a big problem, why don’t we teach parents how to block them in their router? Instead of funding a company that verifies people’s age, the governments could fund the creation of a constantly updated domain blocklist for those pages, and there would be no security or privacy implications.

Don’t get me wrong, I am in full agreement with you on the fact we should trust no one online to send our ID’s in to be verified. The idea is absolutely criminal and reckless. I don’t care if it is being done through a third party that merely gives you a token to access naughty sites.

It’s all an abuse of power and should be cut off like a cancerous tumor.

But the problems with teaching parents to use a router means you will be limiting them down to one brand of router because every other brand has a slightly different interface. Or we introduce regulations to have a standardized interface across all routers.

And if it is anything like the old apple airport routers or even the Google Wifi or Google Nest routers you need a specific app installed to access their features and functionality.

I am not sure how it is in Europe or the UK, but in the US, not many parents are not technically inclined and not willing to go digging deeper into their router settings or look up ways to use the router to full effect to better shield their own kids from things like pornography.

All that most people know is that router goes burrr and that is it.

They look towards more technically inclined people to help them fix their computers, setup Plex, and maybe setup domain Blocklist if they have been informed about it.

Most people do not want a class teaching them how to use a router to shield their kids from things like pornography. They want the simple and easy solution like a Token system since it takes all the work of protecting their kids off their shoulders.

It makes governments like the US happy because many parents are lazy, they do not want to really raise their kid, so politicians will introduce laws like this because “it is to protect the children!”

A dog whistle I am all to sick of hearing…

    • How should the furry fandom react? Embrace it? Reject it? And if so, how to deal with the risk of being “called out”?

Personally I do believe we as a community need to reject the puritan idea in all it’s forms.

If anyone is being called out, it could be viewed as online harassment and it should be documented and reported to website administration (if on central network social media like Facebook, deaddit, and dead bird site.)

If you are on any decentralized social media and they are calling you out on your instance, document their attacks and report them to the instance administrator. If that instance administrator will not do anything, leave that instance for a better instance like Yiffit.net if on Lemmy or packmates.org if on Mastodon.

    • Is their point valid but are they simply to loud and aggressive?

What they propose over the community is censorship. It is not a valid reason. It is a means of control. If we give in to their demands on this, they will demand another thing be censored and we will have to give in to appease them. Then another, and another, and another till the fandom itself is either dead or a husk of it’s former self because it censored everything out of it on the clean web and drove everyone that was a part of it either into seclusion and never talking about furry fandom or really limiting it down to encrypted matrix chatrooms and onion links on the dark web because puritans destroyed what we had on the clear web.

We should be allowed to freely think and have our own ideas and depict what we want in media we either make ourselves or commission from artists. We shouldn’t be limited by other peoples narrow ideas, views, and beliefs. Whether they are children or adults.

    • Or are their methods correct and it’s time that the fandom received a wake-up call?

Their methods are not correct. Again what they are proposing and forcing on us is censorship. The only wake-up call the fandom needs is to realize that these puriteens are fascists trying to shove their fascist ideas down our throats or make our lives miserable if we don’t comply.

And we need to stand up to that. It should be made fully clear that they are not welcomed within the fandom if they want to force us to cowtow to their demands of censorship.

They need to accept the fandom for what it is. Otherwise they need to leave the fandom.

  • Well the pawstar website says it is butterscotch colour using wild wolf fur (a synthetic fur they custom made that involves black highlighting through out to give it a more realistic fur pattern.)

The only times I have seen this pattern accomplished, and accomplished well is from artists that do a realistic style or a hybrid of toon/anime/realistic. Good examples are artists like Dark Natasha (realistic) or Kacey Miyagami (hybrid).

Commissioning them is usually hard + expensive.

It is probably better to simplify the color to it’s base colour, butterscotch, for simplicity sake.
