Perhaps the closest term is “cognitive dissonance.” I don’t think current usage best fits your description, although the original event that inspired the term certainly does.

Cognitive dissonance was first investigated by Leon Festinger, arising out of a participant observation study of a cult that believed that the earth was going to be destroyed by a flood, and what happened to its members — particularly the really committed ones who had given up their homes and jobs to work for the cult — when the flood did not happen.

While fringe members were more inclined to recognize that they had made fools of themselves and to “put it down to experience,” committed members were more likely to re-interpret the evidence to show that they were right all along (the earth was not destroyed because of the faithfulness of the cult members).

There is the sunk-cost fallacy, but that is more about investments. I don’t know if it’s refers to popularity like OP wants.

I miss the in-depth comments from users experienced in specific fields. I followed RealTesla on Reddit and it was amazing because you had software engineers, automotive engineers, safety systems engineers, lawyers, finance people, car industry insiders and many other perspectives all discussing the topics and bringing their unique insights to the conversation. Here it seems you have the same tired jokes repeated on most posts and not nearly as much depth.

One of the reasons I didn’t want Hillary was to avoid more dynasties (Bush, Clinton). We need need political families keeping power to themselves.

Social media’s impact on society is relevant to technology. I would even say it is one of the most important questions in relation to technology today. So, how an owner tries to silence criticisms of his social media site for spreading fascism seems relevant to me.

I volunteered at the occupy wall street camp in New York. Fun times.

I met an interesting Argentinian girl through ICQ. A co-worker ended up getting their inbox filled with large attachments from an overseas office with fast internet. We were still on dial-up. We just had pop3 access, no online front end. I stayed in the office over night to download the files so the connection wouldn’t be interrupted by someone else accessing the line. To pass the time, I downloaded ICQ and started chatting with the Argentinian girl. She introduced me to this song.

The term “hallucinations” originally came from computer researchers working with image producing AI systems. I think you might be hallucinating yourself 😉

The solar/battery stuff was just him saving an almost bankrupt company his cousins had. SpaceX and Tesla had both invested in the company, and he would have lost the money and like faced regulatory scrutiny had it went under.

Hyperloop was his effort to disrupt California’s high-speed rail plans.
