People save memes? Today I learned…
kde, linux, busses, open source and the good old Grateful Dead.
People save memes? Today I learned…
I never did get a music subscription of any kind. Guess I am glad about that now. I just host my own server. Spotify never had a quarter of what I want to listen to anyways so I guess there is that.
Listening to Legion of Mary 12-10-1974 right now.
This is bizarre. My friends wouldn’t want random interruptions throughout the day and neither do I.
Follow? I don’t follow anyone, that seems so shallow …
Edit: but to be fair, we all like different things. Foss is about scratching you own itch, so if you feel you want an app like this (seems easy enough to do) you can always make it yourself.
XP was bad enough that I was determined to switch to Linux then. I think you have Rose colored glasses.
2000 was windows Peak.
That is such a bummer, and I blame the music manufacturers.
I have a dedicated Linux laptop for all my guitar effects to replace the foot pedals. I have found I need to pay attention to what I buy to integrate into my system, but they are out there.
I switched in 2003, and I was happy to do it back then. I have an MSDN, support windows application development and back end Microsoft Services for a living. I still can’t stand their crap.
I do everything I could do in windows, play games, and generally have a better experience. If I absolutely need to access a windows desktop, I can RDP in an pay as you go Azure virtual desktop. But I will never have windows at home again.
Please:
My windows laptop does not want to conserve the battery, or use an 80% charge. It instead relies on a third party piece of software - typically the manufactures - that drags in all sorts of crap I do not want, with Eula’s I do not agree with. Linux doesnt do that, and properly preserves my battery. I don’t know whats wrong with your Mint install or laptop, but I have a laptop I put linux on 10 years ago, and it still works great and the battery is still within 95% of new, which frankly is amazing. Never had windows on it. And of course you can configure all of that with a GUI.
My other laptop had windows on it, and the intel driver would turn off features in my wifi card because I had not paid for that version. In linux it was a full feature wifi card.
My printer wont work with windows, even though it is supposed to be a windows printer. The drivers, which won’t install, even if they did will pull in a bunch of crap, and Eulas that I do not agree with. On my linux machine it just works. No drivers needed.
In Windows, it nearly bricked my Video card trying to update firmware from a driver update I did not ask for. Had to force a new driver, which in turn updated firmware. And once again, said driver adds a ton of crap and services and a Eula I do not want. On my Linux machine, it just works, AND does not require me to manage drivers at all. AMD.
I am not sure what you are trying to say about Excel, that is just a confusing sentence.
For me the world is the opposite. Linux is easy and just works. Windows is the pain in my ass and always does something annoying (exactly like this article is saying).
I daily drive Linux. Have for years. I choose to only remote into widows, and that is only if someone will pay me to do it. I have an MSDN and all MS software available to me, and even when it is free to me, I would rather not use it.
Postgis and Qgis don’t require windows. ArcGIS is such bloat ware. They live by the cult following rather than merit.
No need to opt out if you never opted in.
Information silos.
You can also use Firefox containers. One of the best features of Firefox.
Winrar in ancient times? Lol. People have been arching for a long time before that. Unix, amiga, apple, pc… that is a funny sentence.
Don’t remember PKARK, ARC, and PKWARE? Zip became popular after the battle with SEA.
I believe Winrar became popular because it was easier to use with multi volume archives. Which conveniently worked well with parity files, which all worked great for distributing on usenet.
Right. In another comment i wondered how funkwhale was handling copyright.
Personally, I gave up on copyrighted music. I just don’t care, there is so much freely traded music out there it just doesn’t matter to me.
But then again 99 percent of music on my server is live so I know I am the oddball
More like get them changed of course, the rules make absolutely no sense. Of course that will be hard because the publishers and corporations have a nice racket going.
True about the enforcement, that would be difficult. If one of the federated nodes suddenly had copyright material, how would we know and deal with it? How does Funkwhale deal with it?
At that point just set up a server for streaming/downloading those files… except that already exists with their existing free distribution methods.
No, the whole point is distributed servers (and users), and there are not easy distribution using a single server method.
I can’t believe we cant get past this, it is ridiculous.
Edit: the library idea was like Freegal where different libraries can contribute.
Doesn’t have to he illegal at all. Plenty of freely shared music out there, and some with less restrictive licenses.
On the other hand it seems absurd I am not allowed to let other people browse my library and listen to songs. Not copy them, simply stream them.
What if we collectively bought the music and lent it out in library fashion? Only I user per stream. I refuse to give up having control because of stupid backwards laws.
I am on lemmy right?
I only skimmed, but not one single suggestion to federated our music? Isn’t that what we need to do now, and not for downloading, simply sharing libraries. It’s out there…
Nope not clear at all.
What are you trying to say? Who is an entitled brat? This comment makes no sense.
Start charging people who monetized their videos, like any other web host. They can run youtube ads, or pay money. Subsidize the free users.
Honestly I thought memes had kinda run their course, i didn’t know there were new ones even, lol.
Hey if it’s fun, that’s great. Kinda was looking for an idea for an app. This might be an interesting one. What features would make a great one?
