Open and free internet doesn’t matter if people are too afraid to talk. I mean, China could turn off the firewall right now, there will not be any increase of dissent online (because dissent gets you harassed by cops, and potentially get arrested).
The solution to internet surveillance and censorship isn’t just techonologically, but also has to be legislatively. Doesn’t matter how advanced the technology is, if it could just be legislated into a crime.
