I’m feeling so uneasy with everything I’ve been seeing. I keep thinking about what we will be this time next year, and if shit hits the fan, what is your plan? I’m queer and was politically active in 2020, so I would potentially be considered a political enemy.
The only blueprint I can think of is what you do in an active shooter situation; Flee, Hide, Fight.
I know there’s that romantic notion of “don’t be a coward, get out and protest”, but I remember the brutality of the 2020 protests firsthand, and even then I thought “thank god I’m going toe to toe with the CPD and not the CCP”. Next time is going to be different. The president now has authority to send drone strikes. Protests and riots don’t stand a chance agains missiles and live rounds.
Flee- I have an Uncle in Montreal who my family could potentially use as a way to at least temporarily escape the chaos. The hope I’d have is that Canada and other countries would accept American refugees, however that’s not a guarantee.
Hide- If borders are closed, lay low and move away from major cities if possible. If civil war breaks out, try to get away from the violence even if you think your side will win. Todays losers may be tomorrows victors.
Fight- If cellular data/ social media algorithms can keep track of you, and surveillance can make sure there’s no movement, this would be the last resort of desperation. I guess if possible try to either find a group for safety in numbers, or conversely go guerrilla as groups of resistance would make easy targets.
Sorry my mind is running and I’m getting scared.

I wish you did. If everyone who thought like you do, started caring and voting and participating, the whole world would be better.
Thought id chime in. I’m in the same boat, it annoys me to no end to care about politics because I can’t help but see it as flawed all the time, I want the least to do with that as possible. I will wholly participate as much as I can if I was esctatic about the system we used, I haven’t looked too closely into other countries but will if I thought I wanted to change my residence. If leaving the US for a country with a different system was a viable option for me, that’s what I would do but I like family too much to go somewhere else.
Not caring about politics is a luxury afforded by living in a country that has had at least a semi-functional political landscape for a while. Those who have lived under oppressive governments will be the first to tell you not to take for granted what you have.

It is a luxury to not consider worrying about yourself as related to politics.

Yeah i agree, im not taking it for granted just because im not interested in politics very much.
the thing about life is, if you’re waiting to be ecstatic about something before participating in it, you’re not going to participate in anything. The whole point of voting is to improve the system. Improve it so much it will make you ecstatic. That’s called patriotism.
I’m not waiting to be ecstatic about it before participating, I’m just doing other things in the meantime that I feel like are more woth my time.

This is what I tell people at work or when I am unsure where people stand. I wish politics weren’t so much in the forefront. I wish we talked about baseball or videogames or countless other things. However, we need to make sure this planet doesn’t go into WW3 and there is one candidate hell bent on making it happen.
Do you care about your friends and family?

You have no friends or family who are in any vulnerable groups? No one’s queer, non-white, not the approved kind of Christian, a person with a uterus?

Why don’t you care about them and their safety?

Why?
